Legend Forge
A source-faithful character-history engine that turns structured random tables into coherent, fully realized life stories for tabletop characters.
What Legend Forge is
Legend Forge is Andrew Connor's long-running reconstruction and modernization of the character-background process from the classic tabletop supplement Central Casting: Heroes of Legend. The project began years ago as an Excel and VBA learning exercise and has grown into a rules-driven system for generating a character's ancestry, culture, family, childhood, adulthood, personality, significant events, and the consequences that connect them.
Rather than presenting a loose list of disconnected die results, Legend Forge preserves the original parent event, follows every referred table, rolls required nested outcomes, and turns the complete result into readable character history. When a rule can resolve deterministically, the final output should contain the realized result rather than unresolved dice notation or a vague reference to another table.
Design principles
Source fidelity
Preserve the original mechanics and wording wherever the source is clear, while correcting obvious OCR, spelling, spacing, and punctuation defects.
Complete resolution
Execute nested referrals, rerolls, modifiers, linked outcomes, and conditional branches instead of stopping at the first table result.
Natural history
Combine the originating event and all child outcomes into coherent narrative rather than exposing internal routing or spreadsheet machinery.
Visible simplicity
Keep formulas, resolver logic, and certification data behind the scenes while presenting a clean end-user character sheet.
The end goal
The finished project is intended to become a dependable character-generation tool that can produce a complete, internally consistent history while remaining auditable against the source rules. The current workbook architecture is also a foundation for a later production application, allowing the underlying mechanics to outgrow Excel without losing the rulings, tests, and source-sensitive decisions already established.
